For raised beds, a minimum depth of 6-12 inches is recommended (12+ inches for root vegetables). A good raised bed mix is 60% topsoil, 30% compost, and 10% potting soil. For bulk orders, soil is sold by the cubic yard (1 cubic yard fills about 9 raised bed areas of 4x4 ft at 6 inches deep). Always order 10-15% extra to account for settling. Topsoil costs $20-50 per cubic yard delivered, while premium garden mix can be $40-100 per cubic yard.
