About Drywall Installation
Drywall (sheetrock) comes in standard 4x8 and 4x12 foot sheets, typically 1/2 inch thick for walls and 5/8 inch for ceilings or fire-rated applications. Always buy 10-15% extra for waste from cutting. Hang sheets horizontally on walls to reduce the number of joints. You will need approximately 1 pound of screws per 500 sq ft, one gallon of joint compound per 100 sq ft, and joint tape for every seam. For a professional finish, plan for three coats of mud: tape coat, fill coat, and finish coat.
